Thinking of hiring a friend to be your wedding photographer ? Think again

Your friend has just purchased the greatest camera since George Eastwood founded Kodak and this camera has all of the bells and whistles. It even came with an extra lens and the camera takes great photos. So this would be the perfect person to ask to photograph your wedding, and it would be cheaper. Here’s the first problem, cameras do not take great pictures the photographer does. The photographer is the one behind the camera making it do what he or she wants. Like a pen and paper, a pen does not write great poetry the writer does.

I am not trying to give new or amateur photographers a bad name, I am trying to prove a simple point. If you have a new camera and you have experience photographing weddings you are ready to take on the responsibility of capturing the most important event in two peoples lives. If you have a new awesome camera and no experience photographing weddings, do not except the task. It really is not about photographing in general it is about problem solving, being a people person and all of the situations that make a wedding day. The photographs themselves are the end point that many things lead to.

As a consumer I understand what saving a few dollars can do. But in this situation being cheap will end up costing you more money unless you get really lucky. It is a gamble to trust this job to a person who has not gained experience from past weddings. I have met too many people at other events complain about what could’ve been at their own weddings had they only not had a friend take a few “snaps”. It really happens too often, not to mention the random person that walks in to the studio asking if we can saves their wedding images. “I thought my friend had it covered, but they were overwhelmed” they say.

To insure you have a professional photographer ask to see a portfolio. Ask for referrals from people you trust. Look to people who have already gone through the planning process and see what they have to say. Do your research, after all you know what you like.
